Guidelines for essay writing style and format are governed by your School, and can usually be found in your course outline, or in some cases, templates are available: the School of Education for example, has an Assignment Writing Template on the Student File Server (S: drive). You should check with your lecturer, tutor, or research supervisor for further information or ask at your School.
The University's Assignment Cover Sheet also gives some broad guidelines about what is expected in terms of margins, line spacing and page size.
If you are having trouble formatting the running head etc, you may like to use the Microsoft APA report template. Note that it may not comply strictly with your School's requirements and may need to be modified.
- Open Microsoft Word.
- On the templates page, click in the search box at the top of the window, type "APA" and search.
[If you are already in a Word document, click File > New, and type APA into the search box.]
- The APA style report is shown in a preview window - double click to open it.
- Click into the different sections to modify, including the pre-formatted running head - for which you need to type the short (3-4 words) version of your essay title. The page numbering in the header is also pre-formatted.
