On the surface and in its free form, Grammarly is an editing tool that helps identify grammatical errors, such as spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure, however, it also uses artificial intelligence to make suggestions and generate text. Grammarly uses ChatGPT as it artificial intelligence tool. When you use Grammarly functions such as rewriting, summarising, improving fluency, improving writing quality, generating citations, creating an outline, changing tone, formality or voice you are using Gen-AI.

The use of text editing tools such as Grammarly may be detected as AI generated text by Turnitin if the AI functions are used. Turnitin advises "Our detector is not tuned to target Grammarly-generated spelling, grammar, and punctuation modifications to content but rather, other AI content written by written by LLMs such as GPT-3.5."

Students must have express permission to use Grammarly. When Grammarly is used this use should be acknowledged.

You should also be aware that GoogleDocs, Microsoft and other commonly used software now include functions that use Gen-AI.
