There is a known issue regarding footnote styles and RefWorks which is understood to be caused by citations that have information within the URL field of the record.

This issue has been escalated to the RefWorks Development team for further investigation and resolution, and they are hoping to have this matter resolved soon.

In the meantime, please try and remove the information in the URL field of the reference (saving the link to the Notes field instead will enable you to keep the information). You should then be able to insert citations using the Chicago style. Once you have finished writing the document, you should be able to manually add the URL information in the appropriate footnote.

If your document continues to freeze having removed the URLs, log out of the Cite N Write add-in in your Word document and log in again. You may need to wait 10-15 minutes for RefWorks to re-set your account in Word.
