Creating a standalone reference list / bibliography

You can drag references from an EndNote Library window directly into your paper. Have EndNote and a Word document open – preferably so that you can see both on your screen at the same time. This type of reference list has no EndNote code embedded.

To drag your bibliography:

  1. Select the desired references in your EndNote Library (see *Keyboard functions below to make selection easier). Make sure the ones you need to create your reference list with are highlighted.
  2. Check that the referencing style in the Bibliographic Output Style window in your EndNote Library is the one you wish to use to format your reference list.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key (or Cmd for Mac) on your keyboard as you drag the references from the library and drop them directly onto the Word document.

*Keyboard functions

  • to choose selected individual references you wish to include, use Ctrl+click (Windows) or Cmd+click (Mac)
  • to choose a list of references that occur one after another, click on the top item, then use Shift+Ctrl (Windows) or Shift+Cmd (Mac) to select the final item in the list. All items should be highlighted
  • you may have all the references you need saved in a Group (folder), to select all use Ctrl+A or Cmd+A
