How do I set up alerts for databases?
An alert is an email service or RSS feed that will inform you when new content matching your requirements have been uploaded to the database.
Different databases use different terms for their alert tools. Look for links or buttons such as 'register', 'alerts', 'email updates', 'my account', 'RSS', etc. Availability of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is often indicated by an orange RSS icon (see image).
Some websites may ask you to register or create a personal account before you can set up the alert.
To set up an email alert you will need to provide an email address when prompted.
The set up procedure for RSS feeds may vary depending on web browser:
Usually, you will have the option of clicking on the RSS icon or a link reading "Subscribe to this feed".
On some websites you will need to right-click the RSS icon, select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location", then paste it into the appropriate place in your RSS reader.
To receive RSS feeds, you will need the relevant reader software. Many free RSS readers are available from the internet. Some browsers and email clients (e.g. Outlook) also have RSS readers built into them. Look for 'RSS' in the preferences menu or bookmarks menu.
