How do I insert footnotes in Word?
Microsoft Word has some useful functions for inserting and editing footnotes in your document.
With your cursor in the text where you wish to insert the footnote, click the References tab, and then Insert Footnote.
This will insert a superscript number in the text and add a corresponding number at the foot of the page. The cursor automatically locates itself against the number at the foot of the page where you should type the reference or note.
Repeat this process for further footnotes. You will note that the numbers automatically adjust even if you insert footnotes in an earlier part of the document at a later time.
Chicago Footnoting style stipulates that the number in the footnote area at the bottom of the page is "normal font", however Word defaults to a superscripted number. To change this, highlight the number and click the in the Home tab (see below).
This will default the text back to Normal font.
