AGLC3 - secondary source citation

I just wanted to clarify how to reference a quote if it appears in a secondary source and I am unable to locate the primary source?

Answer

As you are aware the principle is that you should always make an effort to find the primary source: However if it is not available to you then you must not pretend you have read it!

Rule 1.3 is on the AGLC3 guide http://library.nd.edu.au/referencing/aglc3/other#s-lg-box-3751739  and gives many ways of citing/referencing material quoted in another souce.
